Descrição
Bacteriostatic Water for research: identity and specifications
Bacteriostatic Water is water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol, supplied in a 10 ml vial as a laboratory solvent for reconstituting lyophilized research compounds and preparing laboratory solutions. The benzyl alcohol acts as a bacteriostatic preservative, which inhibits microbial growth in the solution after the vial has been opened for repeated withdrawals at the bench. It is an auxiliary product, not a peptide, and contains no active research compound.
Role in the laboratory
Most research peptides are supplied as lyophilized powder for stability during storage and shipping. Before use in in vitro assays, the powder is dissolved in a known volume of a suitable solvent to reach a defined concentration. Bacteriostatic water is one of the solvents commonly used for this step when the reconstituted solution will be sampled more than once, because the preservative limits microbial contamination between withdrawals.
Solvent choice depends on the compound and the assay: some peptides are better dissolved in sterile water, dilute acetic acid or a buffer, and benzyl alcohol may be unsuitable for certain cell-based experiments. The appropriate solvent should always be validated by the laboratory for each protocol.
- Reconstitution of lyophilized peptides to a defined concentration
- Preparation of stock solutions for repeated sampling
- Bacteriostatic preservation with 0.9% benzyl alcohol
- Compatible with standard laboratory vials and pipetting workflows

Quality and chain of custody
Each shipment is packed and tracked under documented chain-of-custody procedures. This auxiliary product does not ship with a certificate of analysis; the HPLC and COA testing described on our quality page applies to every research compound we supply, and each lot COA can be reviewed before purchase.
Laboratory handling
Withdraw the required volume with clean technique and add it along the inner wall of the vial containing the lyophilized compound, then swirl gently until fully dissolved, without vigorous shaking. Record the volume used and the resulting concentration, keep the opened vial closed and protected from contamination between uses, and discard it according to the stability period validated by the laboratory. Handling must be performed only by qualified personnel, in a bench environment suitable for in vitro experimentation.
Frequently asked questions
What is in the vial?
Water with 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a bacteriostatic preservative, 10 ml per vial.
What is the difference between bacteriostatic and sterile water?
Both are used as laboratory solvents. Bacteriostatic water contains benzyl alcohol, which inhibits microbial growth after the vial is opened, so it suits solutions sampled more than once. Plain sterile water contains no preservative and is usually used for single withdrawals.
Is it suitable for every compound?
Not necessarily. Some compounds dissolve better in other solvents, and benzyl alcohol can interfere with some cell-based assays. Validate the solvent for each protocol.
Does it come with a certificate of analysis?
No COA is issued for this auxiliary product. Every research compound we supply has its own lot COA, which can be reviewed before purchase.
Who can purchase it?
Sales are restricted to qualified researchers and institutions, for laboratory use only, as detailed in the research-use-only notice on this page.
See the reconstitution guide, the peptide reference guide and the page on how every lot is tested by HPLC and COA.
Research use only (RUO). This material is supplied for in vitro laboratory research only. It is not a drug, dietary supplement or cosmetic, and it is not intended for human or veterinary use, or for the diagnosis or treatment of any condition. Sales are restricted to researchers and institutions.
